A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
