"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There's just a key snag: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're not alone. Multiple high-profile fans have publicly coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the best bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals repeatedly feature them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Historic Recognition

The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed confidence called for a new sound – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global following.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
