Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such medications must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
