The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Critical Shortage of Weight-Loss Jabs

Under one in 10 individuals that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its inaugural advice on the drugs.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

Based on projections, over two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidance affirms that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be managed with comprehensive and ongoing support," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are key hurdles to broad access to the treatments that can help people shift considerable weight, explains the body.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even under the current most optimistic scenario, the manufacturing of these medications would only suffice for around 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, per the WHO.

The recommendation calls on nations and manufacturers to expand availability, through measures including patent sharing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the primary ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Work

GLP-1 drugs mimick a body's own hormone to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so users consume fewer calories.

Individuals usually start to lose weight within a few weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Research indicates patients may put most of the weight back on a year later of discontinuing the treatment, as their usual appetite come back.

To be overweight or obese increases your chance for developing diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight affects individuals in countries worldwide and was responsible for 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
